Gunsmoke Western #34 - Matt Baker art

Gunsmoke Western #34, 1956 - Matt Baker's impressive first panel depicts a stagecoach embarking on its journey. This large drawing's lack of a border or frame nicely suggests the openness of the frontier. The characters match several western archetypes, from the toughened cowboy to the fearful city slicker. Despite only four pages, Baker tells the story with great efficiency. The craftsmanship behind the layout and pacing reinforce this tale as one of his best issues for Atlas. Other artists in this issue include Mort Drucker, Jack Keller, Jay Scott Pike, George Tuska and John Severin (cover). This is number 2 of 4 Gunsmoke Western issues with Baker art and/or covers.
