Frontline Combat #9 - Wally Wood art

Frontline Combat #9, 1952 - The Civil War is the backdrop for all the entire issue, starting with a fine Harvey Kurtzman cover. Wally Wood chronicles the early days of the conflict in St. Louis, which had yet to decide whether to join the Union or Confederacy. Each panel is impressively detailed, from the crowds gathered around the soldiers, to the on The artist effectively uses three vantage points to increase the illusion of depth in the opening scene: the decorative military drums in the foreground, the soldiers and artillery just behind them, and the city and river in the far distance. All contribute to establishing the setting with considerable artistic flair. This issue also contains art by Jack Davis, John Severin and Will Elder. This is number 8 of 13 Frontline Combat issues with Wood art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Wood or Frontline Combat issues. See also this blog's Wood checklist.
