Haunted #16 - Steve Ditko art & cover
Haunted #16, 1973 - A night watchman promises to guard a wealthy family's tomb, but doesn't hesitate from robbing other graves in the area. Steve Ditko's tale is almost too quickly drawn, showing low levels of detail and effort on most of the panels. His cover is even worse, using the bare minimum of elements within a poor layout. What? Disappointing? That's an amazing cover!
Just because it's simply drawn doesn't make it less interesting. It's beautifully designed and vividly coloured. I think it must have really stood out on the racks back in the day.
I wholeheartedly agree that simplicity does not equal inferiority, but this one
falters compared to Ditko's many other covers. His bronze age Charlton works especially vary widely in quality although there are some gems here and there. The best covers of his career were arguably done for Charlton in the 1950s, some of which have already been reviewed on this blog. I appreciate sharing your differing view, though.
